Tongues as Signs for Unbelievers — what are they?

Let me share a few thoughts on the subject of tongues. I am aware that this is very controversial, but so be it. Here I give you a list of how these passages are often interpreted:

No. in Acts in 1Corinthians
1. foreign languages foreign languages
2. foreign languages Pagan extatic utterances
3. foreign languages special language (between man and God)
4. special language special language

Let us lay the foundation to the correct understanding of the Scriptures. (more…)

Peter and the Great Sheet — common and unclean animals

Let me share a few thoughts on Peter’s vision of a great sheet descending with all kinds of animals in it. Did the vision meant the abrogation of the food laws as traditional Christian theologians claim? Or perhaps the passage was meant to communicate a different idea. (more…)

Deriving Literal Truth from Symbolic Passages — does truth matter?

Throughout the history of the Christian church we have seen many doctrines developed. One only needs to go to a Christian bookstore or a bible college library to find the diversity of interpretations on biblical passages. What is the reason for such a diversity of interpretations? (more…)

Thoughts on Romans 14 — are the food laws abrogated

How often has the above chapter been used as proof text that the law (particularly the food laws) is abrogated? Does it really teach that keeping the laws of God isn’t necessary? Well, if these laws are abrogated, then one can be faithful, while disobeying the food laws. But does this passage really teach that these laws are abrogated? We must conduct a careful investigation to find out. (more…)

Was Abraham a Jew? — a question asked

It depends who you ask ;-)

The term “Jew” is derived from either Judah or Judaea, I am not sure, but it doesn’t really matter. What matters is how it was used. In the first century it was used of those who belonged to the religion of the covenant people. The race is referred to as Israelites, but the religion was Jewish. Thus, Paul can argue that those who were of the faith of Abraham were true Jews. (more…)
